From a sum equal to the actual rent of a tenement
occupied by such officer, or in lieu of such sum the sum
in sub-paragraph (b) appropriate to his case, whichever
is the less, there shall be deducted, unless the officer's
emoluments include free quarters, a sum equal to rent for
quarters, and the difference, if any, shall be payable to
him as rent allowance; but no such allowance to a male
officer shall exceed 10 per cent. of his salary, if he
has dependents, or 5 per cent., if he has none, unless his
emoluments include free quarters, in which case the said
sum equal to his actual rent or sum in lieu, whichever is
the less, shall be payable as rent allowance without
deduction.
(b) If an officer resides in a tenement and
(i) occupies a post in Part II of
Appendix VI,
(ii) has completed 20 years' service,
(iii) has one or more dependents,
(iv) shares the tenement with one or more
other officers, or
(v) is entitled to free quarters as part
of his emoluments,
the appropriate sum mentioned in sub-paragraph (a) shall be on
a salary of -
(i) more than £1,400,
